Intro to Layer Basics

  • Layers are the most important aspect of photoshop.
  • They have their own panel and category in the menu bar.
  • Window/Layers - F7
  • Shift + command + N (Layer/new/layer)
  • You can click the eyeball icon next to each of these layers to see what the graphic would look like without them.
  • The checkered icon means that it's an empty transparent layer with nothing on it.
  • It's important to make a habit of grouping layers this as we begin to create larger documents with upwards of hundreds of layers.
  1. Click the create a new group icon in the layer panel.
  2. Double-click the text group one and let's rename it to logo.
  3. Drag the layers you want to be in the new folder.

Beyond being organized, groups can be helpful when moving layers around the canvas. When an entire group is selected, they can be moved around the canvas as if they were linked together, versus when an individual layer is selected, it moves around the canvas alone.
