The best gift that you can give your brain is physical exercise.
"Learning is too important to be left behind in the classroom".

  • Learning doesn't progress logically
  • It takes time to assimilate new knowledge
  • It's normal to feel that you've been taking exasperating steps backwards in your understanding

---

  • There's a connection between learning math and science and learning a sport (recall volleyball practices, and the constant repetition).
  • My mind should construct the patters of meaning rather than just accepting what someone else told me.
  • Having a smaller working memory means you can more easily generalize your learning into new, more creative combinations.
  • "You are not alone if you think you are an imposter"
  • We can make significant changes in our brain by changing how we think
  • "The virtue of the less brilliant"
  • Approaching material with the purpose of learning it on your own can give you a unique path to mastery.
  • Take pride in who you are, specially in the qualities that make you different

There is no substitute for experience. The best type of learning is that one which happens when you figure things out on your own.

The most important thing you can do is taking responsibility for your learning.

Even though not taking things at face value can be harder, if you develop your own understanding you will end up on the other side of complexity.

"I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity."

----

Great advise for problem-solving:

Be mindful of switching between the focused and diffuse mode often.

Start with a hard problem, if you're stuck, change to an easy one. This will allow your mind to go into diffuse mode about the hard problem. Then return to it, and try again. The solution might come to you more easily.

My main takeaway from this section were
- it helps to study with friends. Many times when your first forming chunks, you don't fully understand everything.  It helps to bounce your understanding off of someone else and see it from a different perspective.
- study groups are most useful when everybody comes prepared ahead of time.
