Neurons are born well into adult.

To help the hippocampus grow (with birth of neurons):
  1. Place self in a rich/creative environment with people who challenge & stimulate you
  2. Even in absence of rich environment, exercise increases number of neurons that are born and survive.
Success doesn't come of just smarts. It comes of passion and persistence.

Learn by doing. Don't read too many books without putting them into action. If you're in a lecture, ask a question.

"I jog to get myself into diffuse mode thinking. The problem is remembering the ideas I come up with while jogging – this is why I started jogging with a notebook."

An enriching environment (discussions, challenging ideas) and exercise help your hippocampus grow new neurons – even into your adulthood.

"Success in life comes not from smarts, from passion and perseverance. Staying on course for a long time."

I recently added this card to our "Learning how to Learn" project because after watching the interview, I learned three important things that I'd like to keep in mind:
  1. Exercise. Neurons are born and renewed even during adulthood and exercise triggers this capability.
  2. Success does not come necessarily by being smart. It comes from being passionate and persistent.
  3. There are ordinary things to discovery every day.
