  1. Read this blog about the writing process.
  2. In a Google Doc titled "The Writing Process [Your Name]" answer the following questions.
  • What are the steps in the writing process?
  • Why is prewriting important?
  • Why is revising important?
  • Which steps of the writing process do you currently use? Why?
  • Which steps in the writing process do you skip? Why?
BONUS: Want to preview the research paper you'll be writing?

  • What are the steps in the writing process? It starts with pre-writing, followed by writing, revising, editing, and ends with publishing.
  • Why is prewriting important? Prewriting is where you set the stage for the rest of your writing. It's the basic framework for the entire piece to be built upon.
  • Why is revising important? Revising is the part where you change, add, or completely omit entire sections of your writing piece. It gives you a chance to experiment with different sources, plot twists, and evidence to see how it will effect your writing as a whole.
  • Which steps of the writing process do you currently use? Why? I use all of them without thinking actually. At times I skip one or two or I fuse some of them together and do them at the same time. It was how I was taught and how I evolved my writing process over time.
  • Which steps in the writing process do you skip? Why? I rarely skip any parts. If I do, it would be the prewriting portion but only if I already have the framework figured out in my head which would allow me to just start writing. Other than that, I often find myself editing as I write or do any revisions. This is where I end up "fusing" steps together.

1. What are the steps in the writing process?

The five steps are:

  1. Prewriting
  2. Writing
  3. Revising
  4. Editing
  5. Publishing
2. Why is prewriting important?
Prewriting allows one to put ideas to paper and organize them into a logical structure.

3. Why is revising important?
Revising is important because you can add, rearrange, remove, and replace whole sections of your work. This is a "big picture" process; editing is focusing on the details of your piece.

4. Which steps of the writing process do you currently use? Why?
My writing process has a natural flow of writing basic ideas, going back and elaborating on those ideas, then I organize them, revise and edit until I'm satisfied with my work.

5. Which steps in the writing process do you skip? Why?
I feel like sometimes I accidentally skip the "writing" step itself because I end up writing a bunch of ideas during the "prewriting" step but they eventually start flowing together.
